takes a bit of getting used to considering the first verion i heard was DKM but its still very very excellent
its one of a handfull of songs that make me weep. its so hard hitting. . . . . shame on on you all. . . . . you know who i mean. . . . . this song is about a millions of men woman children who have all died. . . . some for reasons they belived in. . . others just because they were in the incorrect place at the incorrect time. . . . . . just like the song
Please, people, have some respect for the fallen. If you need to argue, take it outside to a lady gaga video or something.

Odd. It seems that Germany (from the way I learned it)coaxed Austria-Hungry into an attack mode against Serbia, regardless of the “avoidance” of war. When Austria still considered peace instead of invasion, Germany literally offered them a “blank check” towards the war costs. Austria agrees, attacks, the allied snowball effect happens, and well, the rest is history, and out of it we get 9+ million dead and some heartfelt anti-war songs like this one.
@AndrewDeLong amusing how kaiser wilhelm said upon hearing of the austrian ultimatum, now all reasons for war have vanished, and we once again avoided a war. the kaiser tried his utmost to avoid a war, once france declared it upon austria, he had to react and stick to his allies. ww1 was a string of small thinngs that made huge waves. i like this song, respect to all who died in this war, im half german half welsh, lost ppl on both sides of the trenches. i ignore nationality when it comes to heros.
I absolutely like this song, it reminds me so much of being back home in limerick. I despise when stupid people from other countrys comment terribly about a gorgeous irish songs like this, if you dont like music like this then stop listening, the song isnt about you its about courageous men who died for a cause so shut the fuck up and LISTEN you idiots.
As an American, again in Europe, and Korea, and Vietnam, and Kuwait, and Iraq, and Afghanistan, and again and again. . . when will we learn. What a gorgeous and moving song.

@normanvonputz
Um, I believe it was Germany which invaded via the neutral region of Belgium. Granted, the ORIGINAL conflict was between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, but that was in the works of being taken care of in a relatively peaceful manner. It was Germany that coaxed Aust-Hung. into war mode, due to its own expansive prospects at the time. At that point, France backed Serbia, & Germany for Austria-Hungary via the Treaty Alliance system, which eventually snowballed it into WW1 full scale.
Gotta Learn This To Sing For The Elderly. . . ! I Like The Song But Its So Low. . . ! -. -
@normanvonputz
I am lost as regards your comment? Germany invaded Belgium neutrality and followed the Schlieven plot re an attack through neutral Belgium and a proposed encirculment of Paris? I suggest you check your histrory.
certainly the best version
thanks
steve
@normanvonputz , that’s utterly incorrect. Initially, Germany declared war against Russia and France, and violated Belgium’s neutrality. This provoked Britain to join the fight, as Britain’s constant strategy was to keep any continental power from controlling Antwerp. Belgium’s neutrality was guaranteed by Britain, Germany and France.
Had Austria quickly punished Serbia, and had the Prussian top-brass not wanted a war, the conflict would not have spread over Europe.
